Saint-Gobain employees from the company’s Performance Plastics division in Hoosick Falls, NY worked side-by-side with YouthBuild students in Schenectady, NY, as volunteers to install sister company, CertainTeed’s, drywall product.
Members of the Northeast Parent and Child Society also came out to work with students and Saint-Gobain employees on the once vacant home. The group was split into two teams. One team installed and spackled the drywall, while the other team worked on cleaning out the spacious backyard for landscaping. Many of the students who participated in the service day had originally started work on this home but have since graduated from the program; yet they still came back in their spare time to work on the home, despite many of them having full-time jobs and taking college courses. Construction manager, George Brower, proudly explained that some YouthBuild students began the program without being able to properly use a hammer; now many of the students are starting careers, going to college and working in their own communities to better their neighbors living conditions.
Television and newspaper reporters came out to capture the story of Saint-Gobain’s partnership and volunteer’s efforts in support of YouthBuild and their students. Check out the link below for a story on this volunteer day….
Stay tuned for more on this developing project and be sure to get excited for the ribbon cutting celebration later next year!
